Galen Rowell used to quote an old Buddhist saying to the effect that, "It's not what you know, but what you realize, that matters." Seeing the world around you and realizing that it is visually exciting is the first step in successful photography.

I live in the city of Pittsburgh but I travel the world over, searching out the wonders and beauties of the natural world. I try to capture what is especially beautiful and interesting to me everywhere, whether it's in my backyard or in the rain forest of British Columbia. Some of those exciting moments are shared with visitors to this site.

Black-and-white remains a deep love of mine. But I think you'll agree that color is exciting in its proper place. I work in transparency and print film, and in digital originals.

The site is divided into seven albums, built around my interests. Birds are a major preoccupation. Flowers are all grown in our garden, and if picked, arranged by my talented wife, Linda Bazan.  It’s hard to classify the wonders we encounter every day, so General Interest, Random Beauty has to cover them. Skies have always captured our imagination and this particular approach is my attempt to re-image their almost alarming magnificence. Sustainable Agriculture is a passionate interest, supporting the local farmers in the area of Southwestern Pennsylvania. Pittsburgh is especially rich in Urban beauty. And finally, Spirit and  Nature, the legacy of John Muir, Rachel Carson  and St. Francis.

I offer some other photographic services. If you like my work, I'll be happy to consider creating a visual album of any event of yours, such as a reunion or other kind of family or business party. I also do annual report-type documentary work for businesses or agencies. Scientific photography of all kinds has been my forte for thirty years. For many years I did hand restoration of genealogical or family-history photography. I now do that same sort of work electronically using Photoshop techniques. And I have excellent scanning and printing capabilities in my workshop, so I'd be happy to consult with you on producing top-of-the-line archival Epson ink jet prints of your favorite photographs, whether starting from digital or film-based originals.
